How many times have you started making something only to realize that little container of buttermilk you bought 6 months ago is expired. Has it really been in there that long?
Here is a quick way to make buttermilk out of regular milk.
Ingredients:
-Milk (just under 1 cup)
-1 Tablespoon White Vinegar or Lemon Juice
Put the vinegar (or lemon juice) in the bottom of a liquid measuring cup. Then fill it up to the 1 cup line with milk.
Let it stand about 5 minutes. Then you have Buttermilk! It gets kinda chunky, this is normal. Now you can use it in any recipe just as you would buttermilk.
This is a great tip. I hate paying for Buttermilk considering it is so expensive and I rarely use it, so thanks for sharing this tip :)
ReplyDeleteWe don't drink buttermilk, so we do this often. It's amazing how many recipes call for it...and don't taste the same if you just use regular milk. This is a great substitute!
ReplyDeleteLeah- I always used to cringe when I had to buy buttermilk.. Just seemed like a waste of money because it always went bad before I used it all. Now that doesn't happen :)
ReplyDeletercb- It really is shocking how many recipes call for just a splash of buttermilk, I find it quite annoying lol. But this recipe works great! I'm glad you already use it :)
ReplyDeleteLove this tip! I actually posted this on my Monday recipe post because the recipe as Salmon Patties and calls for buttermilk.
ReplyDeleteThe only time I use buttermilk is when I make salmon patties or homemade biscuits and I use less than a cup each time! I hated buying buttermilk and wasting it! I would have to make salmon patties AND biscuits every night for 3 or 4 days just to use a small pint up!!
Thanks for visiting my blog!
Tabitha- How funny! I really hate to buy it too, just seems like such a waste. I'm glad that you already use this frugal tip! :)
